# Number Sense Blog

Being able to recognize and work with patterns is an important foundational math skill. Often learned in elementary school, pattern recognition helps us observe and make predictions based on those observations. Furthermore, a strong understanding of pattern recognition helps students prepare to learn more complex concepts such as algebra later on.

This week’s word problem challenge provides a fun opportunity to practice their number pattern skills. Go ahead and give it a try, and check below for the solution.

Question: What are the next 4 numbers in the pattern below?

50, 45, 46, 41, 42, _____, _____, _____, _____

Solution: There are two steps in the pattern. To get from 50 to 45, we subtract 5. To get from 45 to 46, we add 1. Then the pattern repeats:
46 – 5 = 41
41 + 1 = 42
42 – 5 = 37
37 + 1 = 38
38 – 5 = 33
33 + 1 = 34

Before I came to Mathnasium, I could sum up everything I felt about math in one word: 'EVIL!' I hated math. ... Mathnasium has been my safe haven. They truly have shown me the light when it came to addressing my fear and provided me with the tools that I need to rebuild my prior knowledge so that I won't forget it. Math is no longer a subject I shy away from but it is a subject I can boldly accept and understand.
