Q: What’s bigger than you but doesn’t weigh anything?
    A: Your shadow!

We don’t mean to be shady, but lean in and listen up, because we have a perfect opportunity for students to practice their elementary math skills! Today’s word problem challenge requires you to dust off your knowledge of addition, subtraction, fractions, multiplication and division.

It’s not just a matter of black and white, but we have faith in you. Check out the question below and take your time working it out. Be sure to check back tomorrow for the solution!

Question: Finn is 5 feet tall and casts a 15-foot shadow. Jake is 2 ½ feet tall. If Jake stands on top of Finn’s head, how tall will their shadow be?

Solution: Since Finn’s shadow is 15 feet, we know that the shadow is 15 ÷ 5 = 3 times his height. If Jake stands on his head, they are 5 + 2 ½ = 7 ½ feet tall altogether. So, their shadow will be 7 ½ × 3 = 22 ½ feet tall.

Before I came to Mathnasium, I could sum up everything I felt about math in one word: 'EVIL!' I hated math. ... Mathnasium has been my safe haven. They truly have shown me the light when it came to addressing my fear and provided me with the tools that I need to rebuild my prior knowledge so that I won't forget it. Math is no longer a subject I shy away from but it is a subject I can boldly accept and understand.
